Effectiveness of Pregabalin in Treatment of Burning Mouth Syndrome

Background and Objectives Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic pain disorder involving burning sensation of the oral cavity without any identifiable lesion. According to recent studies, pathogenesis BMS presumed be caused by neuropathic condition. Gabapentin pregabalin have been used for various pains, but has several pharmacokinetic advantages over gabapentin. To our best knowledge, there are no studies reported on administration in treating Korea. Therefore, this study, we investigated therapeutic effect BMS.Subjects Method We chose as candidates 33 patients diagnosed took more than four weeks. Pregabalin was administered at 75 mg once day 2 4 weeks first, then dose modified depending whether or not symptoms improved. Effectiveness treatment evaluated way that subjectively answered were improved.Results A total 21 (63.6%) out responsive treatment. Among those, last follow-up, 8 (38.1%) showed slight improvement, 13 (61.9%) mostly improvement disappearance symptoms. The average time interval from starting first symptom 50.1 days, most within weeks.Conclusion This study concludes can added meaningful option BMS. additional double-blind clinical should followed further prove effectiveness pregabalin.
